back in Sin City

we got back into Sydney about 7pm on Monday night… Our first interstate shows made for a pretty fun weekend!

we were up bright and early on friday to drive down in Jon’s trusty Suzuki Swift hatchback:

The drive is boring and goes on forever. We forgot to pack lunch so ate absolute shit all the way down. Car playlist included Dr. Doom, The Thaw, Truth From Facts, Hira Hira, Little a, Blueline Medic, Rival Schools, Ohana, Jimmy Eat World, Aphex Twin, Seekae, etc etc.

We stayed with this lovely man and his gf Soula.

Melbourne is kinda different to Sydney:

you ride trams

There is a strong coffee culture

There are velociraptors that eat buses

This has given rise to velociraptor support industries, largely based in sunny Coburg.

we played a show at Catfood press with Bowels (awesome!), Baryshnikov (super-fun as always) and Encircling Sea (EPIC).

Catfood is located in Zombie Dance Lane

EAT THE RICH THEY ARE TASTIER

sorry for the terrible band photos, I still don’t know how to use my camera.

us again

and that’s about where my batteries ran out, but we played a house show at Chris&Soula’s place in Coburg on Sunday with Truth From Facts and Alphabet Snakes. It’s pretty much worth the 10 hour drive just to see Truth From Facts play. Damn but they’re good. And what other band will engage in a (totally sincere) mid-set discussion about the relative worth of a particular argument put forth by Theodore Adorno?

Seriously, it was pretty great to kind of witness the principles of mutual aid that fuel our national DIY scene from another angle, i.e. the receiving end. Chris and Soula were wonderful hosts,  and when all the bands from Saturday night agreed to give their share of the door to us to cover costs (a gesture we make all the time without really thinking about it), it really meant a lot.

Plus the weather! holy crap the weather! a whole weekend of perfect, golden sunshine-filled early autumn days. For Sydney residents expecting the full four seasons in one day treatment, we were pleasantly surprised.

So, thanks Melbourne! We’ll be back soon.
